WELCOME TO POSK

POSK is an organisation of the Polish community living in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Our aim is to preserve the bond among Polish people living in Ireland, to promote Polish culture, art and native tradition, and to cultivate and develop national identity. Friends of other nationalities are very welcome too!

POSK is run by a Committee consisting of 9 members, whose work is entirely voluntary.
The seat of POSK is the ‘Polish House’ located at 20 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin 2.
The Polish House is open every Saturday from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm (excluding Holy Saturday, Christmas, New Year and the month of August).
We run a Polish Library and Polish language classes.
Moreover POSK organises meetings with Polish people from many walks of life, such as: culture, art, science and politics; and organises a variety of events including the celebration of national feast days, anniversaries etc.

We invite Polish people living in Ireland to join The Polish Social & Cultural Association in Dublin.

Witold ZABORNY

born in 1969. He graduated with first class honours in the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice (Poland). He took part in numerous organ interpretation courses and master classes, working under the guidance of G. Bovet, U. Spang-Hanssen, H. Tachezi, W. Zerer, J.L. Perrot and A. Isoir, among others. In 1992 he won 3rd prize at the Ist J.P. Sweelinck International Organ Competition in Gdansk. In 2003, under the SOCRATES Programme he gave master classes for the students of Oulu Polytechnic, School of Music, Dance and Media in Finland.

His artistic activity embraces recitals and chamber music concerts. He also works with The Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra and The Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra in Katowice. He has taken part in important music festivals in Poland and abroad (Austria, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Czech Republic and Finland). He has recorded for the radio, TV and has CD recordings. In March 2011 he defended his postdoctoral thesis and obtained a lecturer’s qualification in the area of musical instruments. He is an academic teacher in the Academy of Music in Katowice, where he holds the post of senior lecturer at the Chair of Organ & Harpsicord. He also teaches organ in the Secondary School of Music in Katowice.

Emilia PYCINSKA
born in 1993. She is a Leaving Certificate student in the Secondary School of Music in Katowice (Poland), studying organ with professor Witold Zaborny. She has participated successfully in competitions held in Poland and abroad. In 2009, at Krasnobród she was awarded a Distinction in the 2nd All Poland Organ Competition “Per Arte ad Astra”. At the All Poland Auditions for Organ Students in Gdansk (2010) she also got an “Honourable Mention”. She won 1st Prize at the Secondary Schools’ Organ Competition in Olsztyn (2011).
She has taken part in organ music interpretation courses conducted by J.Gembalski, L. Ghielmi, G. Gnann, O. Latry, B. Oberhammer, J.L. Perrot, D. Titterington and others.
She has appeared at many concerts (e.g. on the 100 anniversary of Olivier Messiaen in Christ the King Cathedral in Katowice, a concert in the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec). She has taken part in different festivals; e.g. the 5th & 6th Silesian Bach Festivals, the Festival “In Praise of the Great Composers”, etc.
Emilia also plays in chamber music ensembles and performs with the Girls’ & Women’s Choir of her own school, acting as an accompanist and a conductor as well. For her achievements she was awarded the Mayor of Katowice’s Prize for the Most Talented Pupil in the Artistic Schools of the Katowice area (2011).

Chopin music recital with Sam Law in Polish House

The Polish Social & Cultural Association in Dublin is delighted to present Sam Law, the winner of the Chopin Award at the Feis Ceoil 2010, who will perform a solo piano recital in the Polish House.

During his recital Sam will perform the following pieces:

The evening of Chopin music will start at 7pm on the 28th of September, in the Polish House, 20 Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin 4. Entrance is free and open to all.

Sam Law, a 19-year old outstanding pianist from Ballymena, Co. Antrim, became the winner of the Chopin Award, presented by the Embassy of Poland in Dublin as part of the 2010 Chopin Year celebrations in Ireland. The award was presented by the Polish Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Tadeusz Szumowski on March 20th 2010 in the RDS Concert Hall.

Sam Law studies with Dr. John O’Conor and Prof. Reamonn Keary at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He has participated in a number of competitions, winning the Northern Ireland Young Musician of the Year in 2006 and the Young Instrumentalist Award at the Ballymena Music Festival in 2007. The same year he won the Segal Cup at the RIAM Festival and the Dorothy Stokes and Patricia Read Cup in Feis Ceoil.

Sam also won the Hamilton Harty Cup and Morris Grant bursary and was a piano finalist in the televised BBC Young Musician of the Year in Cardiff where he also won the Walter Todds bursary for the most promising talent.

He has given solo recitals in various concerts and venues in Northern Ireland and in Dublin. He has also taken part in Master Classes with Barry Douglas, Pavel Nersessian, Douglas Humpherys, Peter Donohoe and Pascal Rogé. His recital at the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queens 2008 was broadcast on Radio Ulster.

Book of Condolence

A period of national mourning has been announced in Poland in connection with the tragic demise of the President of the Republic of Poland Mr. Lech Kaczyński and his wife Mrs. Maria Kaczyńska.

The Embassy wishes to inform that the book of condolence will be open at the Embassy's premises (12 Ailesbury Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4) from 12 April until 15 April between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

Memorial Mass

A Memorial Mass to commemorate the Victims of the plane catastrophe near Smoleńsk, will take place on Friday, 15 April at 11:30 in St. Audoen's Church (14 High Street, Dublin 8). The Mass will be celebrated by the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin and will be attended by the Diplomatic Corps, as well as by representatives of the Oireachtas and the Irish Government.

Below is the text of the speech which Lech Kaczynski, who died on Saturday, was going to deliver at the 70th anniversary ceremony of the Katyn massacre.

“Dear Representatives of the Katyn Families. Ladies and Gentlemen. In April 1940 over twenty-one thousand Polish prisoners from the NKVD camps and prisons were killed. The genocide was committed at Stalin’s will and at the Soviet Union’s highest authority’s command.

The alliance between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union, the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact and the Soviet attack on Poland on 17 September 1939 reached a terrifying climax in the Katyn massacre. Not only in the Katyn forest, but also in Tver, Kcharkiv and other known, and unknown, execution sites citizens of the Second Republic of Poland, people who formed the foundation of our statehood, who adamantly served the motherland, were killed.

At the same time families of the murdered and thousands of citizens of the eastern territory of the pre-war Poland were sent into exile deep into the Soviet Union, where their indescribable suffering marked the path of the Polish Golgotha of the East.

The most tragic station on that path was Katyn. Polish officers, priests, officials, police officers, border and prison guards were killed without a trial or sentence. They fell victims to an unspeakable war. Their murder was a violation of the rights and conventions of the civilized world. Their dignity as soldiers, Poles and people, was insulted. Pits of death were supposed to hide the bodies of the murdered and the truth about the crime for ever.

The world was supposed to never find out. The families of the victims were deprived of the right to mourn publicly, to proudly commemorate their relatives. Ground covered the traces of crime and the lie was supposed to erase it from people’s memory.

An attempt to hide the truth about Katyn – a result of a decision taken by those who masterminded the crime – became one of the foundations of the communists’ policy in an after-war Poland: a founding lie of the People’s Republic of Poland.

It was the time when people had to pay a high price for knowing and remembering the truth about Katyn. However, the relatives of the murdered and other courageous people kept the memory, defended it and passed it on to next generations of Poles. They managed to preserve the memory of Katyn in the times of communism and spread it in the times of free and independent Poland. Therefore, we owe respect and gratitude to all of them, especially to the Katyn Families. On behalf of the Polish state, I offer sincere thanks to you, that by defending the memory of your relatives you managed to save a highly important dimension of our Polish consciousness and identity.

Katyn became a painful wound of Polish history, which poisoned relations between Poles and Russians for decades. Let’s make the Katyn wound finally heal and cicatrize. We are already on the way to do it. We, Poles, appreciate what Russians have done in the past years. We should follow the path which brings our nations closer, we should not stop or go back.

All circumstances of the Katyn crime need to be investigated and revealed. It is important that innocence of the victims is officially confirmed and that all files concerning the crime are open so that the Katyn lie could disappear for ever. We demand it, first of all, for the sake of the memory of the victims and respect for their families’ suffering. We also demand it in the name of common values, which are necessary to form a foundation of trust and partnership between the neighbouring nations in the whole Europe.

Let’s pay homage to the murdered and pray upon their bodies. Glory to the Heroes! Hail their memory!”

On Saturday April 4 - Saturday before Palm Sunday - 16:00 Circle of Friends Foundation, John Paul II has invited all the traditional cakes Easter bazaar. Revenue from the event is destined for charity (and especially the Easter breakfast for homeless Poles noclegujacych temporarily in the house of the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity in Dublin and the hiring of locum support for them).

An evening with film star Slawomir Norberczaka

On Saturday 28 February, at. 18.30 in POSK zabłysely-in flashes, and appeared on the red carpet in August the biggest celebrities from the world of film.
The next edition of the movie stars of the evening was the presentation, during which Slawomir Norberczak remote relationship with a visit to London ceremony to celebrate the BAFTA (the British film awards) and the IFTA (prizes awarded in Ireland). Do not run out a major film, photographs, original recordings and competitions with prizes. It was a truly Hollywood evening!
On that day, officially began operations POSKowy FILM CLUB.

SUNDAY PLAYSCHOOL IN THE POLISH HOUSE

As we were asked by many Polish parents to organise some events for small children, we initiated the Sunday Playschool. The children can now build early friendships with their counterparts and the parents have an opportunity to exchange their experiences on a regular basis. We hope this integration of the Polish families will bring them a lot of joy and benefits.

On the last Saturday of February we organised a soirée with Krzysztof Jan Wojciechowski, who presented his latest book ”The Miko?aj Rej secondary school in Warsaw, 1950-1955 (an apogee of Stalinism) being seen from Cafe Gruz” (2006). The book has been highly praised in Poland. The author is a scientist with broad international experience and a long-standing expert of FAO and other prestigious organisations. He also proved to be an outstanding writer and storyteller.

POSK AT THE EXPERT ROUNDTABLE

A Committee member of POSK has been invited to participate in a two-year project organised by UCD. She will represent the Polish community in Ireland as an expert with international delegates of other organisations and institutions dealing with migration issues in Ireland. Through our participation we hope to increase awareness among local authorities and migration activists of our situation and to initiate solutions to make our lives easier in Ireland.

The Polish House hosted a Mass on the first Saturday of the New Year at 5.00 pm, after which we shared oplatek (wafer). Then we sang Christmas carols to the accompaniment of a piano. This way we celebrated Epiphany and caught up with each other after the break.

INTEGRATION MEETING IN THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL25 March 2007POSK, the Polish Psychological Centre Dublin, a Polish employee of Emigrant Advice, and other organisations dealing with migrants were invited to participate in the cultural and information evening organised by the charity the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. CHRISTMAS BREAKDecember 2006On the last two Saturdays of December, i.e.: 23 and 30 December the Polish House was closed. During Christmas break numerous regular visitors of the Polish House went back home to meet their families and spend that special season with them.

A NATIVITY PLAY BY POLISH CHILDREN

17 December 2006The children attending Polish classes in the Polish House prepared and performed a nativity play under the supervision of their teacher Ms. Ma?gorzata. An audience consisting mainly of the parents and families of the children was delighted with the show with its very attractive theatrical scenery.

A SEMINAR ON THE CHALLENGE OF IMMIGRATION FOR SMALLER COUNTRIES OF EUROPE7 – 8 December 2006A representative of POSK was invited to the seminar organised by University College Dublin (UCD) and NORFACE concerning the challenges of immigration for smaller countries of Europe. We presented the profile of the Polish community in Ireland and our activities. The audience listened intently and greatly appreciated the presentation.

EXHIBITION OF CRACOW CRIBS, WOODEN SCULPTURES AND THE PAINTINGS ON THE GLASS BY ANNA MALIK24 November – 3 December 2006With great pleasure we organised in the Polish House an exhibition of Cracow cribs, paintings on the glass and wooden sculptures by Anna Malik, all on the theme of Christmas. Our House became for 10 days a true angel‘s home. The exhibition was very popular, and many exhibits were sold.

INAUGURATION PUBLICATION „POLISH MIGRANT WORKERS IN IRELAND”

15 November 2006POSK was invited to the presentation of the interesting publication called: „Polish Migrant Workers in Ireland” by Katarzyna Kropiwiec, who visited our House beforehand to gather materials. During the meeting in the interesting international circle the reasons for Polish emigration and the insights into Poles’ lives in Ireland were presented. We observed with pleasure the first attempts to analyse our stay in Ireland in an open international forum.

AN AUTUMN FEAST

14 October 2006Before the cold days for the second time this year we decided to meet outdoors. Our garden was filled with tasty smells of grilled meat, and we all enjoyed Polish music.

A VISIT OF THE DELEGATION OF POLISH SEJM I SENATE IN THE POLISH HOUSE4 October 2006The Speaker of the Sejm Mr. Pan Marek Jurek together with a large group of Polish politicians and the New Ambassador to Ireland Mr. Tadeusz Szumowski paid a short informal visit to our House. Together with the representatives of POSK and Mr. Cathal McCabe, a director of the Ireland Poland Cultural Foundation, they discussed cultural Polish-Irish contacts. We hope that this debate will increase the promotion of our culture in Ireland.

A VISIT OF THE POLISH MEDIA TO THE POLISH HOUSE

3 October 2006The journalists of the leading Polish media: TVP 1 „Wiadomos´ci” („News”), a daily newspaper „Rzeczpospolita” and the Polish Press Agency (PAP) paid an informal visit to the Polish House. They were hosted the same way as Poles who visit it every Saturday, i.e. they were served refreshments and had a long conversation concerning the life of Poles in Ireland. As the result, a feature reflecting life here has been broadcast on the main news of TVP 1.

A MEETING OF THE POLES WITH THE DELEGATION OF SEJM AND SENATE

2 October 2006The representatives of POSK participated in the open meeting with representatives of the Polish Sejm and Senate, which was organised by our Embassy in the Park Inn Hotel, Dublin 7. We presented important matters bothering Poles living in Ireland and we tried to find solutions. We hope that this meeting will bring some essential changes…

OPENING OF THE COMPUTERISED POLISH LIBRARY NAMED AFTER PETRONELLA BROWN AND A TALK BY MR JACEK KOZIK30 September 2006To officially open our improved Polish Library, named after Petronella Brown, we invited Mr Jacek Kozik – a poet, philosopher and literature lover, who gave a talk titled: „A man is a man because of the memory, humanity – thanks to a book.”
We have also officially welcomed the new Polish Ambassador to Ireland Mr Tadeusz Szumowski and his wife.
We closed the evening with the refreshments and cultural discussions.

A MEETING WITH THE NEW POLISH AMBASSADOR TO IRELAND MR TADEUSZ SZUMOWSKI AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE POLISH AUTHORITIES17 September 2006Due to taking up by Mr Tadeusz Szumowski the function of the Ambassador of Poland to Ireland and the official handing over of St. Audoen’s church from Irish authorities to the Poles, representatives of the Polish authorities came to Dublin. These included Mr. Maciej P?az²ynski, Vice-speaker of the Sejm (the lower chamber of the Polish parliament), and Professor Andrzej Stelmachowski, the Chairman of the Association “Wspólnota Polska” (Polish Community).
In the new Polish church, at 14 High Street, Dublin 8, the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp and Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin concelebrated the mass. Afterwards we met with the new Polish Ambassador and the politicians to discuss the issues bothering us and to find the solution together.
The discussion, which was at times tumultuous, brought us closer to each other and we hope that it will increase our solidarity and cooperation abroad…

AFTERHOLIDAY MEETINGS OF THE POLES IN THE POLISH HOUSEAugust 2006A majority of us returned from holidays and came to our Saturday meetings to share memories of their journeys with their countrymen. Our new library system has been met with enthusiasm by book-lovers longing for Polish literature, who paid their first visit after the break on 5th August in the Polish House.

COMPUTERISATION OF THE LIBRARYJuly 2006In July 2006 the Polish House was closed.
With our book-lovers in mind, and for practical purposes too, we prepared a professionally organised Polish library. The computerisation of the book system has improved access to and use of our rich collection of books in POSK.

FAREWELL TO THE POLISH AMBASSADOR TO IRELAND MR WITOLD SOBKÓW25 June 2006On the occasion of the end of his term as Polish Ambassador to Ireland, we, together with The Irish Polish Society, organised a farewell party for Mr Witold Sobków, during which we thanked Mr Sobków for his support of the work of our organisations and frequent participation in Polish-related events. The party was enhanced by a musical programme, which included the works of Fryderyk Chopin and Stanislaw Moniuszko, performed by Polish tenor, Jacek Wislocki to the accompaniment of David Bremner and Irish pianist Therese Fahy. Refreshments were served but the main attraction was an enormous cake! There was plenty for everyone…

PICNIC UNDER THE STARS10 June 2006In accordance with a newly emergent Polish custom in Dublin, we met on the June Bank Holiday weekend in the intimate surrounds of the garden of the Polish House. Apart from good food: grilled beef and chicken with bread accompanied by a couple of glasses of wine, we sang a few national songs and danced away under the stars to a selection of Polish hits.
There was no end to the dancing, partying and general fun which was had by all…

CELEBRATION OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE 3rd OF MAY6 May 2006We met in the Polish House to celebrate the 215th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the 3rd of May, a document which was far ahead of its time, promoting freedom and pioneering in Europe. A lecture was given and afterwards a vocal recital took place by Ewa Marcinkowska to the accompaniment of Argentinian pianist German Lema.

COMMEMORATION OF THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF POPE JOHN PAUL II AND UNVEILING AND CONSECRATION OF HIS PORTRAIT1 April 2006To express our gratitude and admiration for the achievements of Pope John Paul II, on the first anniversary of his death we decided to commemorate him in the Polish House by commissioning a portrait by Cracow artist Adam Kie?b. Our long-standing chaplain, Andrzej Pyka and chaplain to the Polish community in Ireland, Jaros?aw Maszkiewicz, celebrated a solemn mass, during which the painting was blessed. The painting can be admired by all in the Polish House..
During the event we recalled the life and activities of our Polish Pope, bringing tears to the eyes of some members of the audience…

MEETING OF THE POLISH COMMUNITY IN IRELAND WITH THE PRESIDENT OF IRELAND, MARY McALEESE22 March 2006The representatives of POSK were officially invited to the meeting with the President of Ireland Mary McAleese, which took place in the residence of the Polish Ambassador. During her speech the President addressed many warm words towards Polish people living in Ireland and expressed her admiration for the achievements of our nation. Our Ambassador reciprocated with praise for the Irish.
The cornerstone of the meeting was the commendable refreshments…

SATURDAY MEETINGS OF THE POLES IN THE POLISH HOUSEJanuary / February 2006Another year has begun, it’s already 2006, and following a short break, we renewed our Saturday meetings in the Polish House.
Having coffee, tea and biscuits and watching Polish TV stations, we talked about our lives in Ireland and turned our thoughts to the Motherland…

A group of countrymen and women, which regularly visits the Polish House, discussed new ideas to add variety to our time spent together. We already have an informal travel club, which regularly makes plans for trips all over Ireland. There are also other interest groups, such as bridge and chess clubs, which perhaps one day will organise tournaments. The idea of organising heats for a song contest has also arisen, the winner of which could be selected at the end of the year.

The number of New Year’s plans which will be carried out depends solely upon us. If the originators take due initiative we will help them to implement them.

One thing is certain - the Committee of POSK aims to improve the Polish House. Our priority goals for 2006 are the implementation of a modern computerised book system in our library, which consists of thousands of Polish volumes, and starting the renovation of the basement area of the house for social and cultural purposes.
